Li fi technolgy is a new invention and presently is in developing stage as we presently use microwave as a media for most of internet services but the bandwidth requirement is regularly increasing and a time will come when we will have tpoo switch to other means . THE Lifi technolgy is similar to wi fi but it provide a very high downlink and uplink capability as the frequency of the visible light is very high that of traditional microwave . The vlc or visible light communication use led bulbs as the modem it switches on and off the bulb at such a high speed that it is partially invisible to the human eye. To transmit or recieve the data the light bulbs are to be on at all time but they can be dimmed to a point where it is unnoticable to human eye. AS the light waves canot penetrate the walls it has a very short range may be a bulding but aside from the above disadvantage it is more secure than the wi fi system we presently use in all parts of world.
In lifi we use white light led bulbs at the downlink transmitter and are mainly used for illumination by supplying constant current, but by fast variation of current the opticla output can be made to vary at a very high speed.
The operational procedure is very much easy if the led is on the digital 2 is transmitted and if the led is off an digital 0 is transmitted
hence all that is required is few leds and a controller which can code the data to tehse leds all that is to be done is to vary the speed at which the led flicker . The speed that doctor HARLAD reached after the demonstration he has done in year 2011 is about 123 mbps with further development it can be upgraded to about 10 gbps .
Light is considered as safe media and can be used at places wheremicrowave are considered very much problemetic like airplanes if all things go well the estimated project bussiness of li fi technolgy is 18 billion by year 2018. It is 5th gernation of nternet network.
